LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) — Coronavirus cases are on the rise in more than a dozen states, including in California.
In California, some experts attribute the recent increases in daily new cases to increases in testing. Other experts are concerned about as businesses reopen.
“I think what we need to be reinforcing is the fact that this should not be the end of mask wearing, and it should not be the end of social distancing,” said Jessica Malaty Rivera, a microbiologist.
In Orange County, a new order was issued that makes face coverings in public “strongly recommended” — stepping back from an initial order that required residents to wear masks. The change came just days after the county’s chief health officer, Dr. Nichole Quick, stepped down following threats and protests at her home due to the order she issued.
It’s not yet clear what impact mass protests against racial injustice in the wake of George Floyd‘s death are having on the spread of the virus.
Health experts in L.A. County have encouraged people at protests — which have included thousands of people over the past two weeks — to wear masks and practice physical distancing whenever possible.
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control said on Friday that every public gathering right now carries a degree of risk.
As of Saturday, Los Angeles County health officials have reported a total of 72,023 confirmed cases of coronavirus and 2,890 deaths during this pandemic.
To date, there are a total of 145,643 positive cases and 4,989 deaths in California.
Other states seeing rises in recent days include Arkansas, Texas, North Carolina and Florida.
The best protection against coronavirus is to wash your hands frequently, avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands, stay at home if you are sick and practice physical distancing.
